Before I explain the root cause, I want to address something almost every patient says to me: "Is it just me, or is this getting worse?"

 

It's not just you.

 

Before remote work became the norm, digital eye strain affected an estimated 5–65% of regular screen users. After the shift to remote and hybrid work, that jumped to 80–94%.

 

The line between "work screen" and "personal screen" has disappeared — remote employees now spend close to 13 hours a day in front of their monitor. 

 

Meanwhile, return-to-office mandates have stripped away the small accommodations — flexible breaks, controlled lighting, stepping away — that many workers had built into their home setups.

 

None of this is a personal failing. It's a structural shift in how we work — and most eye doctors haven't caught up to what it's doing to the eye's focusing muscle. And this is why yesterday's fixes aren't keeping up.

Why Most Digital Eye Strain ‘Remedies’ Never Actually Fix The Problem...

Over the years, I started noticing something strange. Nearly every patient walking into my clinic had already tried something.

 

Blue light glasses. Eye drops. The 20-20-20 rule.

 

Better monitors. Dark mode. Lower brightness.

 

Some even spent hundreds of pounds redesigning their workspace, and almost all of them told me the same thing: 'It helped... for a while.'

 

But by 3pm, the burning always returned. That was the clue.

 

These weren't bad solutions. They were simply solving different problems.

Eye drops  provide real, immediate relief from dryness and surface irritation. I’m not telling patients to stop using them.

Helpful In Theory — But Not Enough In Practice

 

Every eye doctor recommends it: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 

 

Yes, it gives that muscle a brief rest.

 

But twenty seconds every twenty minutes still leaves it working almost the entire day.

Once I realised every popular solution was treating a symptom rather than the mechanism, the question changed completely.

 

I stopped asking: 'How do we make screen work more comfortable?'

 

I started asking: 'What is actually happening inside the eye after eight hours of focusing?'

 

That question changed everything.

 

And once you see what's actually happening inside the eye during a normal workday, it's hard to look at digital eye strain the same way again.

The Root Cause of Digital Eye Strain

Every time you look at something close—a monitor, phone or book—a tiny muscle inside your eye called the ciliary muscle contracts to keep what you're looking at in focus. 

 

Hours of uninterrupted close-up focus can keep that muscle working almost continuously, accumulating oxidative stress, leaving people with burning eyes, blurred vision and headaches by mid-afternoon.

 

Emerging research has found this to be the most important contributor to the fatigue many screen workers experience.

 

Once I understood that the real driver of the lingering fatigue was sustained muscular strain and oxidative stress— I started looking for something that could actually act on that mechanism directly, inside the eye itself.

Introducing Astaxanthin: The Carotenoid Japanese Researchers Have Studied For Over A Decade

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid — the same class of pigment that gives salmon and shrimp their colour. But the reason I included it isn’t the colour story. It’s the research.

 

It's small structure allows it to reach eye tissue and act directly on oxidative stress in the eye’s microcirculation — including the area surrounding the ciliary muscle. 

 

In lab studies, its antioxidant activity has been measured at roughly 100 times that of vitamin E.

 

In a study conducted by Dr. Yoshida and colleagues in 2008, astaxanthin showed significant improvements in reported headache associated with prolonged near-work.

 

A separate study by Dr. Miki and colleagues in 2006 found that subjects taking a lower daily dose showed improved focusing speed and reduced subjective eye tiredness after sustained close-up work.

I’ll be straightforward about the research here : these are small clinical trials, mostly out of Japan, not massive multi-year studies.

 

What they show consistently, though, is a measurable physiological effect on the exact mechanism that I see driving fatigue in my own patients every day. 

 

That’s a meaningfully different starting point than another “supports eye health” supplement with no fatigue-specific research behind it at all.

 

Unlike blue light glasses, astaxanthin doesn’t do anything about the light hitting your eyes. It was never meant to. 

 

It does something blue light glasses structurally cannot: it acts on the muscle itself, addressing the oxidative stress that accumulates hour after hour, regardless of what’s filtering the light coming in.

If you're already doing what you can — breaks, glasses, drops — and still ending the day fried, the light was never the whole problem. The muscle doing the work is.
